The launch of this super phone will take place sometime this month (gossips are saying 23rd June but don’t hold your breath), by none other than Maxis, Samsung’s soul mate if you wish.
Even so, that is not the only way you can get your hands on this dream phone. There are a few retailers that have brought in the Samsung Galaxy S2 for a premium price, these phones are AP (approved permit) which comes with a 1 year warranty provided by the retailer. Priced from RM 2250 – RM 2350 , it’s a high price to pay considering there are chats going on that suggest the retail price Samsung will come up with is RM 2099.
However, not all is lost for the patient minded, once Samsung and Maxis launch the phone. The AP retailers will be forced to drop their price by three to four hundred ringgit therefore we are looking at RM 1699 to RM 1799 for an AP one. For someone who doesn’t want to be tied down to the horrendous meal plan Maxis has cooked up and waiting to serve, they can consider buying an AP set, which doesn’t come any different than the original by Samsung.
Because let’s face it, Maxis is known to overcharge their users for data usage and seeing that all Android packages have to be bought with a data and call plan, which means the minimum amount you have to pay per month is RM 58 for 500MB of data and RM 50 commitment for the lowest call plan available which comes up to a total of RM 108 a month. The phone will probably come with a RM 300 discount from the retail price with a 12 month contract. Suggesting that the RRP for the phone is RM 2099, the effective cost you’ll be paying is RM 1799 + (108X12) = RM 3095 . That is IF you do not get overcharged for accidently using over the data cap. Let’s say out of the 12 month contract you over use the data for 3 months, and the price for overused data is absurd and lets just say it comes up to RM 600, that is a total of RM3695.
Now let’s see what happens when you buy an AP phone at RM 1799 and subscribe to a Digi line which you would not be asked to sign a contract. The Digi plan for Android devices comes under the DG Smartplan, starting at RM 68 for the Digi Unlimited plan which gives you not one not two but THREE GB of data and no minimum call usage. Digi doesn’t charge for overused data, they only reduce your speed once you reach the 3GB cap. Seeing as you are not under contract, there is no effective cost that you are bounded to. So RM 1799 + RM 68 + your call usage per month for as many months as you wish, if you’re a heavy internet user, you have no worries that Digi is going to overcharge you,if you are a light call user, your phone bill will be less than Maxis’ commitment of RM 108 a month. AND if you’re a heavy call user, there won’t be a difference with the Maxis bill just that it comes with better internet.
If you’re a huge Maxis fan, then I guess you could just go for the plan they’re offering, if you’re not, I’ve explained how you can go about getting one from an AP retailer and why applying for a Digi plan is better.
